Brothers and Sisters,

Todays post is a love letter or a love list from His Holiness, its purpose for me is to direct me towards further self -actualization and living a more honest, loving life of integrity. All of the Dali Lamas words bring wondrous opportunities , I seem to personally find myself realizing numbers 14 and 19 with a greater frequency and more intense focus . Hmmm?
In a society such as ours this becomes a life long process and one that requires great discipline. It is however the course that human kind is finally awakening to and one that will eventually embrace all of us on the Earth. Along with it I have included Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for those brothers and sisters who wish to dig deeper in the dirt.

Peace Blessings and Love

Dali Lama and his Instructions for Life

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three R’s:

Respect for self
Respect for others and
Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a theory in psychology that Abraham Maslow proposed in his 1945 paper A Theory of Human Motivation, which he subsequently extended to include his observations of humans’ innate curiosity.

Maslow studied exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people, writing that “the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology and a cripple philosophy.”[1] Maslow also studied the healthiest one percent of the college student population.

While Maslow’s theory was regarded as an improvement over previous theories of personality and motivation, it had its detractors. For example, in their extensive review of research that is dependent on Maslow’s theory, Wahba and Bridwell (1976) found little evidence for the ranking of needs that Maslow described, or even for the existence of a definite hierarchy at all. Chilean economist and philosopher Manfred Max Neef has also argued that fundamental human needs are non-hierarchical, and are ontologically universal and invariant in nature – part of the condition of being human; poverty, he argues, is the result of any one of these needs being frustrated, denied or unfulfilled.

[edit] Representations

This diagram shows Maslow's hierarchy of needs, represented as a pyramid with the more primitive needs at the bottom.

This diagram shows Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, represented as a pyramid with the more primitive needs at the bottom.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is often depicted as a pyramid consisting of five levels: the four lower levels are grouped together as deficiency needs associated with physiological needs, while the top level is termed growth needs associated with psychological needs. Deficiency needs must be met first. Once these are met, seeking to satisfy growth needs drives personal growth. The higher needs in this hierarchy only come into focus when the lower needs in the pyramid are satisfied. Once an individual has moved upwards to the next level, needs in the lower level will no longer be prioritized. However, if a lower set of needs is no longer being met, the individual will temporarily re-prioritize those needs by focusing attention on the unfulfilled needs. The individual never regresses from one level to a lower one, however. An example of this fact may be a businessman at the esteem level who is diagnosed with cancer. He will spend a great deal of time concentrating on his health (Physiological needs) but would still value his work performance (esteem needs) and is likely to return to work during periods of remission.

[edit] Deficiency needs

The first four layers of the pyramid are what Maslow called “deficiency needs” or “D-needs”: the individual does not feel anything if they are met, but feels anxious if they are not met. The deficiency needs are:

[edit] Physiological needs

The physiological needs of the organism (those enabling homeostasis) take first precedence. These consist mainly of:

  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Sleeping
  • Shelter
  • Sex
  • Warmth

If some needs are not fulfilled, a human’s physiological needs take the highest priority. Physiological needs can control thoughts and behaviours, and can cause people to feel sickness, pain, and discomfort.

[edit] Safety needs

When physiological needs are met, the need for safety will emerge. When one stage is fulfilled, a person naturally moves to the next. These include:

  • Personal security from crime.
  • Security as against company lay-offs
  • Health and well-being
  • Safety net against accidents/illness and the adverse impacts

[edit] Love/Belonging/Social needs

After physiological and safety needs are fulfilled, the third layer of human needs is social. This psychological aspect of Maslow’s hierarchy involves emotionally-based relationships in general, such as:

Humans need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, whether it comes from a large social group (such as clubs, office culture, religious groups, professional organizations, sports teams, gangs) or small social connections (family members, intimate partners, mentors, close colleagues, confidants). They need to love and be loved (sexually and non-sexually) by others. In the absence of these elements, many people become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety, and depression. This need for belonging can often overcome the physiological and security needs, depending on the strength of the peer pressure. e.g. an anorexic ignores the need to eat and the security of health for a feeling of belonging.

[edit] Esteem needs

All humans have a need to be respected, to have self-esteem, self-respect, and to respect others. People need to engage themselves to gain recognition and have an activity or activities that give the person a sense of contribution, to feel accepted and self-valued, be it in a profession or hobby. Imbalances at this level can result in low self-esteem,inferiority complexes. People with low esteem need respect from others. They may seek fame or glory, which again are dependent on others. However confidence, competence and achievement only need one person and everyone else is inconsequential to one’s own success. It may be noted, however, that many people with low self-esteem will not be able to improve their view of themselves simply by receiving fame, respect, and glory externally, but must first accept themselves internally. Psychological imbalances such as depression can also prevent one from obtaining self-esteem on both levels.

[edit] Cognitive needs

Maslow believed that humans have the need to increase their intelligence and thereby chase knowledge. Cognitive needs is the expression of the natural human need to learn, explore, discover and create to get a better understanding of the world around them.

[edit] Aesthetic needs

Based on Maslow’s beliefs, it is stated in the hierarchy that humans need beautiful imagery or something new and aesthetically pleasing to continue up towards Self-Actualization. Humans need to refresh themselves in the presence and beauty of nature while carefully absorbing and observing their surroundings to extract the beauty that the world has to offer.

[edit] Growth needs

Though the deficiency needs may be seen as “basic”, and can be met and neutralized (i.e. they stop being motivators in one’s life), self-actualization and transcendence are “being” or “growth needs” (also termed “B-needs”), i.e. they are enduring motivations or drivers of behavior.

[edit] Self-actualization

Self-actualization–a concept Maslow attributed to Kurt Goldstein, a mentor to Maslow–is the instinctual need of humans to make the most of their abilities and to strive to be the best they can.

Maslow writes the following of self-actualizing people:

  • They embrace the facts and realities of the world (including themselves) rather than denying or avoiding them.
  • They are spontaneous in their ideas and actions.
  • They are creative.
  • They are interested in solving problems; this often includes the problems of others. Solving these problems is often a key focus in their lives.
  • They feel a closeness to other people, and generally appreciate life.
  • They have a system of morality that is fully internalized and independent of external authority.
  • They have discernment and are able to view all things in an objective manner.

In short, self-actualization is reaching one’s fullest potential.

According to Maslow, the tendencies of self-actualizing people are as follows:

1. Awareness

  • efficient perception of reality
  • freshness of appreciation
  • peak experiences
  • ethical awareness

2. Honesty

  • philosophical sense of humour
  • social interest
  • deep interpersonal relationships
  • democratic character structure

3. Freedom

  • need for solitude
  • autonomous, independent
  • creativity, originality
  • spontaneous

4. Trust

  • problem centered
  • acceptance of self, others, nature
  • resistance to enculturation – identity with humanity

[edit] Self-transcendence

Maslow later divided the top of the triangle to add self-transcendence which is also sometimes referred to as spiritual needs. Spiritual Needs are a little different from other needs, accessible from many levels. [2]

Maslow believes that we should study and cultivate peak experiences as a way of providing a route to achieve personal growth, integration, and fulfillment. Peak experiences are unifying, and ego-transcending, bringing a sense of purpose to the individual and a sense of integration. Individuals most likely to have peak experiences are self-actualizing, mature, healthy, and self-fulfilled. All individuals are capable of peak experiences. Those who do not have them somehow suppress or deny them.

Maslow originally found the occurrence of peak experiences in individuals who were self-actualizing, but later found that peak experiences happened to non-actualizers as well but not as often:

I have recently found it more and more useful to differentiate between two kinds of self-actualizing people, those who were clearly healthy, but with little or no experiences of transcendence, and those in whom transcendent experiencing was important and even central… It is unfortunate that I can no longer be theoretically neat at this level. I find not only self-actualizing persons who transcend, but also non-healthy people, non-self-actualizers who have important transcendent experiences. It seems to me that I have found some degree of transcendence in many people other than self-actualizing ones as I have defined this term…[3]

Brothers and Sisters,

The empirical truths found in the following article are specifically posted here to support any and all Targeted Individuals suffering through the horrors of Community based Gang Stalking and Electronic Harassment.

It is also a call to all my fellow brothers and sisters to “Wake Up”, return to your natural state of awareness, recognize the hypocrisies, abuses, charades and lies that are the foundation of this society and instead of participating in them, work to first expose and ultimately change them !

Take off your masks , address any fraudulent ego driven patterns / behavior and re humanize yourselves.

With Blessings and Love

Citizen Soul Power

WHETHER YOU begin the journey of growth beyond ego in your early twenties (sooner if ego-based mind-bending wasn’t the premier goal in our schools) or when you embrace your mid-life crisis, you will need courage.

Some of you will have to learn to be honest again– speaking from the heart instead of the “I’m okay – you’re okay” charade Americans especially love to play. “How are you? – great!” is just linguistic code for “my ego-image is just fine and I won’t mess with yours if you play the game with me.”) .

Becoming honest with yourself may be the most difficult task. As a nation of ego-driven addicts (no substance abuse required– we Americans abuse our fellow humans and the planet daily)– driven to the point of eye-glaze in compulsive consumption, greed, and image-adoption (ever notice that all of our “role models” are now film and television actors?), denial is a way of life.
DENIAL IS the most insidious form of dishonesty. It finds lesser scapegoats for the larger sins that we don’t wish to admit to ourselves. We are obsessed with second-hand cigarette smoke while we ignore the exhaust emmissions of millions of motor vehicles and trade in factory air-polllution as commodities, because if it makes money (feeding our addiction) we’ll let it pass.If you quit smoking your ego feels so much holier as you dodge the second-hand bullets of the economically hopeless, and watch that train load of nuclear waste rolling past your home in the middle of the night.

DENIAL IS INSANITY. It constructs elaborate webs of lies to conceal from yourself the destructive nature of your true priorities– just as alcoholics or wife-batterers have gut- wrenching excuses (it’s never their fault) for the trails of wreckage they leave in wide white-water wakes behind them.

EVERY SINGLE thing wrong or in imbalance on this planet is due to ego, self-will-run-riot, greed, manipulation and fear. We are phonies economically screwing our brothers and sisters so a few of us can accumulate enough wealth to feel “happy” and “secure”.Happiness is a foolish thought for people who don’t know who they are or understand the true motivations and consequences of their actions. Security in human life is non-existent– the only true certainty is change. Life is what happens to the plans you’ve made.

MUCH OF our ego-sickness is due to a deliberate, continual, and all-pervasive propaganda barrage designed by our political and business leaders to keep us forever insecure while holding out to us the carrot of great security through wealth (and their continued leadership, of course).Any form of ego-driven life makes us easily-manipulated slaves. So in addition to rediscovering our true selves, our gifts, vocations and missions, we will need to learn “the wisdom of insecurity”.

THE BOOK of exactly that title, by the highly-readable Alan Watts will have a profound influence on you . The fundamental premise is, of course, that a life devoted to acquiring and holding the means to “security” is absurd because it is based on fear of loss– and the market can crash (and does) or you can die or lose you health (and you will) at any moment. If one’s primary goals are attaining security and defending it against loss, how much of your life will you spend spontaneously living it now?

FEAR IS the key to the ego-driven society. We get a single message in an overwhelming torrent– do what they want you to do (give ‘em the money!!!) and buy that BMW or vote for that lying SOB and be sexy, powerful, admired and in, or risk being so socially undesireable they may not only avoid you, not employ you and let you starve and/or go without medical care– they may even frame you, send you to “trial” for anti-government activity (after the media has totally assassinated your character), convict you, and maybe even kill you.

WE NEED to fight this, of course, but we can’t do this singly as individuals– and we deal with a society in which the very language of interpersonal relations is fear-based, status- conscious, defensive or aggressive. In his book The Celestine Prophecy, James Redfield discusses attention- seeking power theft, and the personal control dramas we are accustomed to using (learned through our up-bringing) as both defensive armor and attention-getting posturing. He also suggests we learn to recognize the different types (intimidation, victim, aloof, etc.) and try to de-fuse the fear that motivates this controlling behavior, then take the next step of relating our true selves to each other, passing power around if the situation warrants.

LIFE CANNOT be controlled. Security is an illusion. Your manipulative plastic “personality” is a fake and your life is a stupid ego- driven dance which you hope will please others who you hope will reward a you who isn’t you and doesn’t know who you are. Time to let ego fall away and scoff at fear– it isn’t your fear anyway– it’s their means of controlling you.If you feel a need for fear in your life, fear not being able to say “today is a good day to die”. The man who can honestly say that has lived each of his days to the fullest.

The Six Keys to Accumulating Abundant Energy…

The very essence of life on earth is energy. Every single thing that we do either brings us energy or causes us to lose energy. Our food, our relationships, our thoughts – everything either adds or subtracts energy. To understand this truth is to understand one of the most powerful paradigms of life.

Because we have choices with regard to our food, our relationships, our thoughts and so much more, we can choose to continuously add energy so as to live life to the fullest. Or, we can choose to destroy the very essence of our life by making choices that drain our energy.

There is a growing accumulation of scientific evidence that the amount of energy that we accumulate, (note that your primary focus should be on energy accumulation not wealth accumulation), has an enormous impact on the quality of the life that we live. Pioneers in the study of personal energy management such as Dr. Orloff and Dr. Hawkins are documenting evidence of the awesome power of intelligently managing one’s energy.

And the most powerful energy concept of all is that the energy we give to others returns to us multiplied many times over. People who radiate positive energy attract positive energy back. And, those who radiate negative energy attract negative energy back.

Every single thing that you do, either adds or subtracts energy. Choose carefully what you do.

The six keys to accumulating abundant energy…

1. Fulfill your physiological energy needs – the primary generators of our energy are food, water, exercise and rest. Abundant energy comes from choosing quality generators: from eating the most nutritious (i.e. natural) food, from drinking plenty of quality water, from getting regular quality exercise, and from getting regular quality sleep.

2. Avoid energy draining people, activities and thoughts – regrettably, the world is filled with energy vampires – people, activities and thoughts that will drain you of your energy. Develop the habit of staying away from energy vampires. Regularly ask yourself the question of whether a given person (or activity or thought) adds to your energy or subtracts from your energy. To the extent possible, stay clear of those that subtract from your energy. Surround yourself with people, activities and thoughts that add to your energy.

3. Release easily – notwithstanding the very best of efforts, you will have life experiences that drain your energy. Stuff happens! Energy vampires abound!! One of the keys to personal energy management is what you do when “bad” things happen. If you let unpleasant experiences linger in your mind then you can benefit from learning one of the many release techniques, my favorite being a condensed version of the Sedona Method.

4. Be happy – Many people make the mistake of thinking that happiness is merely a result. Being happy is, in fact, a choice. Happiness is an attitude and as such it represents a choice. If happiness is not a choice, then how do you explain two people experiencing the very same event and one walks away happy, the other walks away unhappy. Make the choice to be happy and learn how to maintain a state of happiness that will fuel your energy.

5. Renew regularly – sleep is your daily renewal and a powerful force in generating energy. But, it is also helpful to have extended renewal periods from time to time. Vacations were conceived to meet this need. Regrettably, many people arrange vacations that are more stressful than their daily activities. Try to use your vacation time to have experiences that truly renew your spirit and regenerate your energy.

6. Share your positive energy – Do not hoard your energy. Share your positive energy with the world and you will experience a return many times over. One of the irrefutable laws of nature is that to get, one has to give. People who radiate positive energy attract energy back. So share your energy with the world!

Think of yourself as an energy machine. Be thoughtful about the fuel you feed your machine. The Divine Power gave you the power to start your machine… only you can create the abundance of energy which will have you routinely experiencing Quantum Leaps.

The Art of Peace..

Brothers and Sisters,

Read and Breath in this material, make it part of who you are in this Sad and Beautiful World .

“The Art of Peace “..

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) was history’s greatest martial artist. He was the founder of Aikido, which can be translated as “The Art of Peace.” Morihei Ueshiba is referred to by the practitioners of Aikido as O-Sensei,”The Great Teacher”. The following quotations have been compiled from O-Sensei’s collected talks, poems, and calligraphy, and from oral tradition.

One

The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose than to realize your inner divinity and manifest your innate enlightenment. Foster peace in your own life and then apply the Art to all that you encounter

Two

One does not need buildings, money, power, or status to practice the Art of Peace. Heaven is right where you are standing, and that is the place to train.

Three

All things, material and spiritual, originate from one source and are related as if they were one family. The past, present, and future are all contained in the life force. The universe emerged and developed from one source, and we evolved through the optimal process of unification and harmonization.

Four

The Art of Peace is medicine for a sick world. There is evil and disorder in the world because people have forgotten that all things emanate from one source. Return to that source and leave behind all self-centered thoughts, petty desires, and anger. Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything.

Five

If you have not
Linked yourself
To true emptiness,
You will never understand
The Art of Peace.

Six

The Art of Peace functions everywhere on earth, in realms ranging from the vastness of space down to the tiniest plants and animals. The life force is all-pervasive and its strength boundless. The Art of Peace allows us to percieve and tap into that tremendous reserve of universal energy.

Seven

Eight forces sustain creation:
Movement and stillness,
Solidification and fluidity,
Extension and contraction,
Unification and division.

Eight

Life is growth. If we stop growing, technically and spiritually, we are as good as dead. The Art of Peace is a celebration of the bonding of heaven, earth, and humankind. It is all that is true, good, and beautiful.

Nine

Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life. Breathe in and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breathe out and bring the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself.

Ten

All the priciples of heaven and earth are living inside you. Life itself is the truth, and this will never change. Everything in heaven and earth breathes. Breath is the thread that ties creation together. When the myriad variations in the universal breath can be sensed, the individual techniques of the Art of Peace are born.

Eleven

Consider the ebb and flow of the tide. When waves come to strike the shore, they crest and fall, creating a sound. your breath should follow the same pattern, absorbing the entire universe in your belly with each inhalation. Know that we all have access to four treasures: the energy of the sun and moon, the breath of heaven, the breath of earth, and the ebb and flow of the tide.

Twelve

Those who practice the Art of Peace must protect the domain of Mother Nature, the divine reflection of creation, and keep it lovely and fresh. Warriorship gives birth to natural beauty. The subtle techniques of a warrior arise as naturally as the appearence of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Warriorship is none other than the vitality that sustains all life.

Thirteen

When life is victorious, there is birth; when it is thwarted, there is death. A warrior is always engaged in a life-and-death struggle for Peace.

Fourteen

Contemplate the workings of this world, listen to the words of the wise, and take all that is good as your own. With this as your base, open your own door to truth. Do not overlook the truth that is right before you. Study how water flows in a valley stream, smoothly and freely between the rocks. Also learn from holy books and wise people. Everything – even mountains, rivers, plants and trees – should be your teacher.

Fifteen

Create each day anew by clothing yourself with heaven and earth, bathing yourself with wisdom and love, and placing yourself in the heart of Mother Nature.

Sixteen

Do not fail
To learn from
The pure voice of an
Ever-flowing mountain stream
Splashing over the rocks.

Seventeen

Peace originates with the flow of things – its heart is like the movement of the wind and waves. The Way is like the veins that circulate blood through our bodies, following the natural flow of the life force. If you are seperated in the slightest from that divine essence, you are far off the path.

Eighteen

Your heart is full of fertile seeds, waiting to sprout. Just as a lotus flower springs from the mire to bloom splendidly, the interaction of the cosmic breath causes the flower of the spirit to bloom and bear fruit in this world.

Nineteen

Study the teachings of the pine tree, the bamboo, and the plum blossom. The pine is evergreen, firmly rooted, and venerable. The bamboo is strong, resilient, unbreakable. The plum blossom is hardy, fragrant, and elegant.

Twenty

Always keep your mind as bright and clear as the vast sky, the great ocean, and the highest peak, empty of all thoughts. Always keep your body filled with light and heat. Fill yourself with the power of wisdom and enlightenment.

Twenty One

As soon as you concern yourself with the &QUOTgood” and &QUOTbad” of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weaken and defeat you.

Twenty Two

The penetrating brilliance of swords
Wielded by followers of the Way
Strikes at the evil enemy
Lurking deep within
Their own souls and bodies

Twenty Three

The Art of Peace is not easy. It is a fight to the finish, the slaying of evil desires and all falsehood within. on occasion the Voice of Peace resounds like thunder, jolting human beings out of their stupor.

Twenty Four

Crystal clear,
Sharp and bright,
The sacred sword
Allows no opening
For evil to roost.

Twenty Five

To practice properly the Art of Peace, you must:
Calm the spirit and return to the source.
Cleanse the body and spirit by removing all malice, selfishness, and desire.
Be ever-grateful for the gifts received from the universe, your family, Mother Nature, and your fellow human beings.

Twenty Six

The Art of Peace is based on Four Great Virtues: Bravery, Wisdom, Love, and Friendship, symbolized by Fire, Heaven, Earth, and Water.

Twenty Seven

The essence of the Art of Peace is to cleanse yourself of maliciousness, to get in tune with your environment, and to clear your path of all obstacles and barriers.

Twenty Eight

The only cure for materialism is the cleansing of the six senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind). If the senses are clogged, one’s perception is stifled. The more it is stifled, the more contaminated the senses become. This creates disorder in the world, and that is the greatest evil of all. Polish the heart, free the six senses and let them function without obstruction, and your entire body and soul will glow.

Twenty Nine

All life is a manifestation of the spirit, the manifestation of love. And the Art of Peace is the purest form of that principle. A warrior is charged with bringing a halt to all contention and strife. Universal love functions in many forms; each manifestation should be allowed free expression. The Art of Peace is true democracy.

Thirty

Each and every master, regardless of the era or place, heard the call and attained harmony with heaven and earth. There are many paths leading to the top of Mount Fuji, but there is only one summit – love.

Thirty One

Loyalty and devotion lead to bravery. Bravery leads to the spirit of self-sacrifice. The spirit of self-sacrifice creates trust in the power of love.

Thirty Two

Economy is the basis of society. When the economy is stable, society develops. The ideal economy combines the spiritual and the material, and the best commodoties to trade in are sincerity and love.

Thirty Three

The Art of Peace does not rely on weapons or brute force to succeed; instead we put ourselves in tune with the universe, maintain peace in our own realms, nurture life, and prevent death and destruction. The true meaning of the term samurai is one who serves and adheres to the power of love.

Thirty Four

Foster and polish
The warior spirit
While serving in the world;
Illuminate the path
According to your inner light.

Thirty Five

The Path of Peace is exceedingly vast, reflecting the grand design of the hidden and manifest worlds. A warrior is a living shrine of the divine, one who serves that grand purpose.

Thirty Six

Your mind should be in harmony with the functioning of the universe; your body should be in tune with the movement of the universe; body and mind should be bound as one, unified with the activity of the universe.

Thirty Seven

Even though our path is completely different from the warrior arts of the past, it is not necessary to abondon totally the old ways. Absorb venerable traditions into this Art by clothing them with fresh garmets, and build on the classic styles to create better forms.

Thirty Eight

Daily training in the Art of Peace allows you inner divinity to shine brighter and brighter. Do not concern yourself with the right and wrong of others. Do not be calculating or act unnaturally. Keep your mind set on the Art of Peace, and do not criticize other teachers or traditions. The Art of Peace never restrains, restricts, or shackles anything. It embraces all and purifies everything.

Thirty Nine

Practice the Art of Peace sincerely, and evil thoughts and deeds will naturally disappear. The only desire that should remain is the thirst for more and more training in the Way.

Forty

Those who are enlightened never stop forging themselves. The realizations of such masters cannot be expressed well in words or by theories. The most perfect actions echo the patterns found in nature.

Forty One

Day after day
Train your heart out,
Refining your technique:
Use the One to strike the Many!
That is the discipline of the Warrior.

Forty Two

The Way of a Warrior
Cannot be encompassed
By words or in letters:
Grasp the essence
And move on toward realization!

Forty Three

The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit.

Forty Four

Iron is full of impurities that weaken it; through forging, it becomes steel and is transformed into razor-sharp sword. Human beings develop in the same fashion.

Forty Five

From ancient times,
Deep learning and valor
Have been the two pillars of the Path:
Trhough the virtue of training,
Enlighten both body and soul.

Forty Six

Instructors can impart only a fraction of the teaching. It is through your own devoted practice that the mysteries of the Art of Peace are brought to life.

Forty Seven

The Way of a Warrior is based on humanity, love, and sincerity; the heart of martial valor is true bravery, wisdom, love, and friendship. Emphasis on the physical aspects of warriorship is futile, for the power of the body is always limited.

Forty Eight

A true warrior is always armed with the three things: the radiant sword of pacification; the mirror of bravery, wisdom, and friendship; and the precious jewel of enlightenment.

Forty Nine

The heart of a human being is no different from the soul of heaven and earth. In your practice always keep in your thoughts the interaction of heaven and earth, water and fire, yin and yang.

Fifty

The Art of Peace is the principle of nonresistance. Because it is nonresistant, it is victorious from the beginning. Those with evil intentions or contentious thoughts are instantly vanquished. The Art of Peace is invincible because it contends with nothing.

Fifty One

There are no contests in the Art of Peace. A true warrior is invincible because he or she contests with nothing. Defeat means to defeat the mind of contention that we harbor within.

Fifty Two

To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.

Fifty Three

The totally awakened warrior can freely utilize all elements contained in heaven and earth. The true warrior learns how to correctly perceive the activity of the universe and how to transform martial techniques into vehicles of purity, goodness, and beauty. A warrior’s mind and body must be permeated with enlightened wisdom and deep calm.

Fifty Four

Always practice the Art of Peace in a vibrant and joyful manner.

Fifty Five

It is neccessary to develop a strategy that utilizes all the physical conditions and elements that are directly at hand. The best strategy relies upon an unlimited set of responses.

Fifty Six

A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind.

Fifty Seven

The key to good technique is to keep your hands, feet, and hips straight and centered. If you are centered, you can move freely. The physical center is your belly; if your mind is set there as well, you are assured of victory in any endeavor.

Fifty Eight

Move like a beam of light:
Fly like lightning,
Strike like thunder,
Whirl in circles around
A stable center.

Fifty Nine

Techniques employ four qualities that reflect the nature of our world. Depending on the circumstance, you should be: hard as a diomand, flexible as a willow, smooth-flowing like water, or as empty as space.

Sixty

If your opponent strikes with fire, counter with water, becoming completely fluid and free-flowing. Water, by its nature, never collides with or breaks against anything. On the contrary, it swallows up any attack harmlessly.

Sixty One

Functioning harmoniously together, right and left give birth to all techniques. The left hand takes hold of life and death; the right hand controls it. The four limbs of the body are the four pillars of heaven, and manifest the eight directions, yin and yang, inner and outer.

Sixty Two

Manifest yang
In your right hand,
Balance it with
The yin of your left,
And guide your partner.

Sixty Three

The techniques of the Art of Peace are neither fast nor slow, nor are they inside or outside. They transcend time and space.

Sixty Four

Spring forth from the Great Earth;
Billow like Great Waves;
Stand like a tree, sit like a rock;
Use One to strike All.
Learn and forget!

Sixty Five

When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way.

Sixty Six

The body should be triangular, the mind circular. The triangle represents the generation of energy and is the most stable physical posture. The circle symbolizes serenity and perfection, the source of unlimited techniques. The square stands for solidity, the basis of applied control.

Sixty Seven

Always try to be in communion with heaven and earth; then the world will appear in its true light. Self-conceit will vanish, and you can blend with any attack.

Sixty Eight

If your heart is large enough to envelop your adversaries, you can see right through them and avoid their attacks. And once you envelop them, you will be able to guide them along the path indicated to you by heaven and earth.

Sixty Nine

Free of weakness,
No-midedly ignore
The sharp attacks
Of your enemies:
Step in and act!

Seventy

Do not look upon this world with fear and loathing. Bravely face whatever the gods offer.

Seventy One

Each day of human life contains joy and anger, pain and pleasure, darkness and light, growth and decay. Each moment is etched with nature’s grand design – do not try to deny or oppose the cosmic order of things.

Seventy Two

Protectors of the world
And gaurdians of the Ways
Of gods and buddhas,
The techniques of Peace
Enable us to meet every challenge.

Seventy Three

Life itself is always a trial. In training, you must test and polish yourself in order to face the great challenges of life. Transcend the realm of life and death, and then you will be able to make your way calmly and safely through any crisis that confronts you.

Seventy Four

Be grateful even for hardship, setbacks, and bad people. Dealing with such obstacles is an essential part of training in the Art of Peace.

Seventy Five

Failure is the key to success;
Each mistake teaches us something.

Seventy Six

In extreme situations, the entire universe becomes our foe; at such critical times, unity of mind and technique is essential – do not let your heart waver!

Seventy Seven

At tthe instant
A warrior
Confronts a foe,
All things
Come into focus.

Seventy Eight

Even when called out
By a single foe,
Remain on gaurd,
For you are always surrounded
By a host of enemies.

Seventy Nine

The Art of Peace is to fulfill that which is lacking.

Eighty

One should be prepared to receive ninety-nine percent of an enemy’s attack and stare death right in the face in order to illumine the Path.

Eighty One

In our techniques we enter completely into, blend totally with, and control firmly an attack. Strength resides where one’s ki is concentrated and stable; confusion and maliciousness arise when ki stagnates.

Eighty Two

There are two type of ki: ordinary ki and true ki. Ordinary ki is coarse and heavy; true ki is light and versatile. In order to perform well, you have to liberate yourself from ordinary ki and permeate your organs with true ki. That is the basis of powerful technique.

Eighty Three

In the Art of Peace we never attack. An attack is proof that one is out of control. Never run away from any kind of challenge, but do not try to suppress or control an opponent unnaturally. Let attackers come any way they like and then blend with them. Never chase after opponents. Redirect each attack and get firmly behind it.

Eighty Four

Seeing me before him,
The enemy attacks,
But by that time
I am already standing
Safely behind him.

Eighty Five

When attacked, unify the upper, middle, and lower parts of your body. Enter, turn, and blend with your opponent, front and back, right and left.

Eighty Six

Your spirit is the true shield.

Eighty Seven

Opponents confront us continually, but actually there is no opponent there. Enter deeply into an attack and neutralize it as you draw that misdirected force into your own sphere.

Eighty Eight

Do not stare into the eyes of your opponent: he may mesmerize you. Do not fix your gaze on his sword: he may intimidate you. Do not focus on your opponent at all: he may absorb your energy. The essence of training is to bring your opponent completely into your sphere. Then you can stand where you like.

Eighty Nine

Even the most powerful human being has a limited sphere of strength. Draw him outside of that sphere and into your own, and his strength will dissipate.

Ninety

Left and right,
Avoid all
Cuts and parries.
Seize your opponents’ minds
And scatter them all!

Ninety One

The real Art of Peace is not to sacrifice a single one of your warriors to defeat an enemy. Vanquish your foes by always keeping yourself in a safe and unassailable position; then no one will suffer any losses. The Way of a Warrior, the Art of Politics, is to stop trouble before it starts. It consists in defeating your adversaries spiritually by making them realize the folly of their actions. The Way of a Warrior is to establish harmony.

Ninety Two

Master the divine techniques
Of the Art of Peace,
And no enemy
Will dare to
Challenge you.

Ninety Three

In your training do not be in a hurry, for it takes a minimum of ten years to master the basics and advance to the first rung. Never think of yourself as an all-knowing, perfected master; you must continue to train daily with your friends and students and progress together in the Art of Peace.

Ninety Four

Progress comes
To those who
Train and train;
Reliance on secret techniques
Will get you nowhere.

Ninety Five

Fiddling with this
And that technique
Is of no avail.
Simply act decisively
Without reserve!

Ninety Six

If you perceive the true form of heaven and earth, you will be enlightened to your own true form. If you are enlightened about a certain principle, you can put it into practice. After each practical application, reflect on your efforts. Progress continually like this.

Ninety Seven

The Art of Peace can be summed up like this: True victory is self-victory; let that day arrive quickly! &QUOTTrue victory” means unflinching courage; &QUOTself-victory” symbolizes unflagging effort; and &QUOTlet that day arrive quickly” represents the glorious moment of triumph in the here and now.

Ninety Eight

Cast off limiting thoughts and return to true emptiness. Stand in the midst of the Great Void. This is the secret of the Way of a Warrior.

Ninety Nine

To truly implement the Art of Peace, you must be able to sport freely in the manifest, hidden, and divine realms.

One Hundred

If you comprehend
The Art of Peace,
This difficult path,
Just as it is,
Envelops the cirle of heaven.

One Hundred One

The techniques of the Way of Peace change constantly; every encounter is unique, and the appropriate response should emerge naturally. Today’s techniques will be different tommorrow. Do not get caught up with the form and appearance of a challenge. The Art of Peace has no form – it is the study of the spirit.

One Hundred Two

Ultimately, you must forget about technique. The further you progress, the fewer teachings there are. The Great Path is really No Path.

One Hundred Three

The Art of Peace that I practice has room for each of the world’s eight million gods, and I cooperate with them all. The God of Peace is very great and enjoins all that is divine and enlightened in every land.

One Hundred Four

The Art of Peace is a form of prayer that generates light and heat. Forget about your little self, detach yourself from objects, and you will radiate light and warmth. Light is wisdom; warmth is compassion.

One Hundred Five

Construction of shrine and temple buildings is not enough. Establish yourself as a living buddha image. We all should be transformed into goddesses of compassion or victorious buddhas.

One Hundred Six

Rely on Peace
To activate your
Manifold powers;
Pacify your environment
And create a beautiful world.

One Hundred Seven

The Divine is not something high above us. It is in heaven, it is in earth, it is inside of us.

One Hundred Eight

Unite yourself to the cosmos, and the thought of transcendence will disappear. Transcendence belongs to the profane world. When all trace of transcendence vanishes, the true person – the Divein Being – is manifest. Empty yourself and let the Divine function.

One Hundred Nine

You cannot see or touch the Divine with your gross senses. The Divine is within you, not somewhere else. Unite yourself to the Divine, and you will be able to perceive gods wherever you are, but do not try to grasp or cling to them.

One Hundred Ten

The Divine does not like to be shut up in a building. The Divine likes to be out in the open. It is right here in this very body. Each one of us is a miniature universe, a living shrine.

One Hundred Eleven

When you bow deeply to the universe, it bows back; when you call out the name of God, it echoes inside you.

One Hundred Twelve

The Art of Peace is the religion that is not a religion; it perfects and completes all religions.

One Hundred Thirteen

The Path is exceedingly vast. From ancient times to the present day, even the greatest sages were unable to perceive and comprehend the entire truth; the explanation and teachings of masters and saints express only part of the whole. It is not possible for anyone to speak of such things in their entirety. Just head for the light and heat, learn from the gods, and through the virtue of devoted practice of the Art of Peace, become one with the Divine.

One Hundred Fourteen

The divine beauty
Of heaven and earth!
All creation,
Members of
One family.

How many times have we set goals, visualized our desired outcome, created and repeated positive affirmations, and yet still not achieved what we had hoped?

There are numerous potential causes for this. Sometimes its simply a matter of WORDS.

Every sound we utter sends out an energy wave that aids in creating our world. With every sentence we speak we are improving or destroying our health, relationships, finances, etc.

The most powerful example I’ve ever heard was a story told to me directly by the woman who had the experience. This woman had developed an incurable disease of the eyes. She was quickly going blind. Her physicians said there was NOTHING they could do. Being very determined and not liking what she heard, she turned to alternative therapies for a possible cure – something she never would have done had she not been in this desperate situation.

A friend recommended she see someone that did crystal healing. She thought that sounded ridiculous but decided to give it a try. During her appointment, the crystal healing therapist asked her to describe herself, her life, etc. and she let her talk for about 10 minutes. Suddenly, the therapist stopped her and said “Did you know that in the last 10 minutes you said the words ‘I hate to see’ 15 times?” The woman was shocked. She used the words “I hate to see” before many things. “I hate to see the way the world is going.” “I hate to see how they are treating the children in schools.” On and on she made reference to “I hate to see” this or that. This was literally an eye opening experience. She switched her words and now years later has perfect vision.

How Many Words Do We Use That Destroy Our Desires?

NEVER NEVER NEVER say “I’m Sorry.” Two of the most powerful words in the English language are the words I AM. These words tell every part of you – your personality, your subconscious, your ego, your spirit – who you are. They define WHO YOU ARE. Be very careful what you place behind those words. When you say “I’m sorry,” you are saying that WHO YOU ARE is a sorry individual. Replace the words “I’m sorry” with “I apologize.” Anyone who eliminates the words “I’m sorry” from their vocabulary will increase their self esteem almost immediately! The same goes for “I’m
sick.” “I’m tired.” “I’m stupid.” – you get the idea. Replace those with “I feel ___” and eliminate the stupid comment altogether.

So What Does This Have To Do With Goal Achievement?

Another very important aspect of conscious language is the LAW OF FOCUS. Whatever we place our attention on is what we create. It’s important to focus on the positive thing we desire rather than the negative thing we want to avoid. For example, never focus on NOT AGING. Focusing on not aging ensures that you will age and quickly. Instead focus on being healthy, vibrant, and youthful.

An interesting and often overlooked part of all this is the need to avoid words that are negating a negative. What the heck do I mean by that? A word like LIMITLESS is actually drawing the subconscious mind to focus on LIMITS. This is NOT what we want. So saying something like LIMITLESS ABUNDANCE is placing limits on the abundance.

An example from my own life is the word EFFORTLESS. In the past when I made affirmations, I would typically end them with the words “easy, effortless, and fun.” An example might be “Having a wonderful relationship is easy, effortless, and fun.” This was actually drawing EFFORT into my life. Since I have eliminated that word and now only use “easy and fun” EVERYTHING has shifted. We sold our house in 2 weeks because it was “easy and fun.” – and there was no EFFORT involved. Doug’s immigration process to the U.S. was taken care of in less than 2 months. There are many, many other examples of how this has made things move very quickly and easily for us.

Review your own affirmations and the words you say out loud or just to yourself and see how POSITIVE you are actually being. It does make a difference!

World Peace—the Healing of the World—

Is achieved through a very simple principle:

We Create Peace By Being Peace. It is this universal truth that has inspired the Peace Every Day Initiative, a global, collective, daily, meditation of peace. The purpose is to unite a minimum of 8,000 people, while holding the vision of 144,000 or more people, to meditate/pray by becoming the vibration of peace for 40 minutes or more each day, individually and especiallly in groups. Any time of day is effective, though sunrise or sunset are powerful nodal times.

This powerful thought-form of peace is enough to shift the global consciousness so that we may fully celebrate peace on earth!

Launching the Initiative ~

The Peace Every Day Initiative was launched on November 8, 2003 at sunset. This was the time of an astrological Harmonic Concordance. The concordance is a lunar eclipse and a six planet configuration in the shape of the Star of David which is said to accelerate the healing of karma, heal the waters of the planet, heal the ecosystem, elevate consciousness, and harmonize male and female into sacred relationship, a subtle relationship which supports people in living in the Divine Presence. It is an accelerated opportunity for humans to work collectively to enhance the transformation of the planet.

It begins by simply actualizing the practice of being peace by meditating/praying at the time of sunset and continuing daily with the commitment. All are invited to make a commitment to this matrix of peace at anytime—so that Peace Every Day Initiative may gain momentum until 8,000 or more peace workers around the globe are holding the vibration of Peace on Earth!

Making the Commitment of Peace ~

In order that we may usher in the reign of peace, the Peace Every Day Initiative asks that each person who feels deeply connected to the process of peace on earth to make a commitment for a minimum of four years to be peace by meditating or praying for 40 minutes or more each day, 5-7 days per week. A meditation/prayer of 40 minutes (or longer) has been selected to honor the sacred number of 40, a number of purification. This amount of time will support each participant in experiencing a quiet mind and becoming and sustaining the vibration of peace. We create this collective vortex of peace at the times when we as humans of the world gather together. The collective support of others in your community, be it at a workshop, class, or friendly affair, help make it easier to go into meditation and experience the vibration of peace.

Although it may be true that sunrise or sunset, the two nodal times of the day, are the most effective times for the vibration of peace to be transmitted into the global mind, it is more important that in our daily gatherings as peaceable beings we practice the initiative. Even for those who already have a daily meditation/prayer practice, your participation in the Peace Every Day Initiative without changing your existing practice is an act of making a conscious global action for creating peace.

Transforming Gatherings into Being Peace ~

Whether you gather for an instructional class on any topic, an organizational meeting, time in nature, support groups, afternoon social tea, or what have you—please choose to make the Peace Every Day Initiative a part of your getting together.

Honoring All Spiritual Paths ~

Peace Every Day Initiative acknowledges the many people around the world that have a committed, daily meditation practice and honors all forms of meditation/prayer. The purpose of the Peace Every Day Initiative is to create a global link in intention and consciousness so that each of our unique spiritual expressions can become strong threads woven together in the tapestry of peace.

The Peace Every Day Initiative practice of creating peace by being peace is whatever form of meditation or prayer that is meaningful to you, whether it is Jewish/Kabbalistic/Essene, Yogic, Christian, Islamic, Sikh, Buddhist, Native American or that of any spiritual path.

The Practice ~

The practice is to simply quiet the mind, and create a feeling-experience of peace. Meditation is a very common way of doing this that is harmonious with all spiritual paths. —But for those who don’t meditate/pray, it may simply be to visualize and experience yourself in the beauty of nature, with the sound of a bubbling stream, or birds chirping, or the silence of a tree.— Move into silence, and from that silence, create the thought, emotion, and feeling of complete peace in every cell in the body and every aspect of your being.

Meditation itself, which is the effortless dissolving into the One is the fullest manifestation of this vibration of peace. Allow yourself to have the feeling-based experience that the peace you are being has already happened globally, as if the world is already in the Thousand Years of Peace. Peace is now! Experience gratefulness, appreciation, and thankfulness to the Divine for this Thousand Years of Peace happening.

Being Our Peace Prayer/Meditation ~

In order to effectively usher in the new paradigm of peace through a group collective effort of prayer/meditation, it is important that we create a feeling-based prayer in which we are being our prayer. The ancient Essene-Kabbalistic teaching (on which Greg Braden’s “Isaiah Effect” is based) has a specific word for this technology of prayer– l’hitpallel. It is a unique expression, which is profoundly different than the contemporary meaning of prayer that infers praying to God or begging God to change God’s mind (as if God is outside of us). L’hitpallel is a verb.

It means to do something to oneself. This way of being in prayer is embodied in the Native American way. The Native American shamans did not pray for rain, they prayed rain. L’hitpallel is not about some external God hearing prayers; it is about us being our prayers, in other words, to hear our own prayers by being them. This is the key technology. We create a feeling of peace, rather than a prayer asking for peace. In l’hitpallel, we are actively and intentionally filling our hearts and having a feeling-based experience of what it is that we are creating. It is feeling that what we are praying for has already happened, and for this we stay in a state of thankfulness. (If this ancient prayer/meditation doesn’t resonate with you, any form of prayer/meditation with a sincere heart creates a vibration of peace.)

To create peace we must change ourselves—becoming what it is that we wish to see in ourselves and in the world. When we change ourselves, we change the whole situation. This feeling-based prayer puts into place the vibratory possibilities of a particular outcome—in this case world peace. In other words, we create a collective resonance that becomes a holographic model of peace consciousness. Peace Prevails on Earth.

A Global Collective Effort ~

It has been hypothesized that as little as the square root of one percent of the world population, which is approximately 8,000 people, is enough to shift the global mind into one of world consciousness for peace. It is for this reason that the Peace Every Day Initiative is committed to inspire at least 8,000 people to collectively create a powerful thought-form of peace, every day.

Our vision is that the number of people meditating collectively through consciousness and intention will soon surpass 144,000, a sacred number for the healing of the world that will bring the Thousand Years of Peace. May the initiative spread to include millions of committed peace workers world-wide.

History shows us that it takes more than a few peace celebrations to sustain peace on earth. This is the time to step-up the effort of our intention and become a continuous, active, global vibration of peace.

The Global Mind ~

The global mind, although there are occasional sparks of peace through the efforts of many peace workers, is still dominated by the consciousness of fear, global greed, global economism and war. Given this, How will lasting peace be effected? Since some people are willing to put so much effort and sacrifice into creating a global vibration of war for self-gain and global domination, in order to shift the global mind there needs to be an equal, daily, sustained effort in creating a global resonance of peace.

This global resonance will manifest more quickly as people from diverse backgrounds and religious and spiritual traditions are willing to come together in a spirit of cooperation and unity by acting with an attitude of tolerance and love. We actually become a living experience of peace. In this way, we realize what the Prophet Zechariah taught, “Not by might, and not by power, but by spirit alone, will we all live in peace.”

Being the Sevenfold Peace ~

From the Essene tradition, peace is not just an external political protocol, it is an active sevenfold process of creating peace, harmony and love with the One—Peace with the body, the mind, the spirit, one’s family, society, the ecology of the living planet, and the Divine Presence. In this process, we create peace by being peace. It is from this place of inner peace that we have more energy and vision to be outer peace, to create the vibration that will sustain an outer peace. This process does not begin with politicians, nationalism or world economic policies.

It depends on us, the people, taking responsibility to create such a strong thought-form and feeling of peace that the global mind shifts away from that of war consciousness to a global village of peace consciousness, from that economic greed, competition and domination to one of synergy and cooperation, from separation from the Divine and need to conquer nature to one of harmony with nature and humanity, from the concept of the accumulation of wealth and material resources as the purpose of life to one of synergy and cooperation and of receiving in order to share so that the whole planet may evolve spiritually.

Collective Meditation/Prayer ~

The act of meditating/praying together is a powerful way for each of us to be the peace process. This technology for true world peace transformation–the healing of the world-Tikkun Olam in the Kabbalistic Tradition–already exists. All that is needed is enough people to participate in awakening to and sustaining this truth. The transformation to peace consciousness accelerates when there is a critical mass in population that join together from all different walks of life, ages, spiritual and religious traditions, to pray and meditate–creating peace by being peace.

The presence of every single person makes a difference. In Leviticus 26:8 it says, “A hundred of you shall chase away ten thousand.” This ancient truth of the power of uniting in peace, which has been with us for over 3,400 years, has some illuminating contemporary, scientific support. (See Scientific Support.)

The Need for A Daily Commitment ~

The question one asks as a peace worker is, “Why haven’t our collective peace efforts created a lasting shift . . . yet?” Research on this question by Transcendental Meditation was that the effect of group meditation begins to fade approximately three weeks after the critical mass is no longer actively meditating in an area.

This is why it is necessary at this point to go beyond a single world-wide event, four big events a year, monthly events and even weekly meditation groups, to bring the process of inner and outer peace to a daily experience of creating peace by being peace.

Blessings ~

May you be blessed for your choice to consciously cooperate in the healing of yourself and the healing of the soul of the world.

“One thing that comes out in myths is that at the bottom of the abyss comes the voice of salvation. The black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light.”

Joesph Campbell

“Re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.”

Walt Whitman

Some parts of the spiritual journey feel as if we’re lost in a wasteland, not knowing where we are or where we’re going, and wondering if we’re just traveling in circles. For long stretches of the journey, the quest requires great self-investment for seemingly little in return. For individuals who adhere to a particular spiritual discipline, commitment wavers during these dry spells. For those in whom the Kundalini has autonomously risen, there is no alternative, no possibility of backing out. Kundalini has Her own unstoppable momentum.

At times, despite the dynamism of this Force that has reshaped our destiny, we sink into doubt. What began in fear or amazement has gone through seasons of joy, hope, disillusionment, and despair. When, we ask ourselves, does the process bear significant fruit? How long must we suffer through the daily pummeling of body and psyche?
As weeks turn into months and years, our faith in the benevolence and guiding presence of the Spirit is sorely tested. Radiant gifts of bliss, beauty and unmistakable blessing are overshadowed by long sieges of pain, torment and physical/emotional depletion. Even if we want to surrender to the workings of the process, often we do not know how.

Charles Breaux says that after an initial six months of “incredible ‘peak experience,’ the dross began spewing out” into his external life. He wrote: “These last seven years have been one intense drama after another, the deepest and darkest karmic patterns within me have been relentlessly quickened by the power of Kundalini.” At the end of his book Journey into Consciousness, he confesses that he continues to wonder if the necessity for letting go will ever cease.

Kundalini can give us wings to transcend the pettiness of the world, then plunge us into the depths, daring us to find the treasure buried there as well. In the beginning, when the Kundalini is moving upwards, Dr. R.P. Kaushik said “it is a negative force — it is destructive. It destroys all your attachments, all your material possessions; it is destroying everything,” which can lead to “a dissatisfaction with everything you have.” Kaushik notes that such feelings of frustration and desperation intensify as the energy works to clear through the six and seventh centers.

“The yogis have described this movement in a beautiful language,” he continues: “The serpent, when it awakens, starts devouring and eating everything that is in its way. When it has gone to the crown center, then from there it descends downwards, as a creative force — the descending triangle or the Shakti triangle. This is the positive movement…” (from The Ultimate Transformation)

Spells of depression are a common feature of the transformational journey. I am, in fact, in a funk as I write this. At times I doubt the value of writing anything for this site and question the benefits of Kundalini. From where I sit at this moment, it seems as if years of the process — and of my life in general, for that matter — have been little more than an endurance test.

In The Stormy Search for the Self, Christina and Stanislav Grof describe it well:
“Not only do those facing such an existential crisis feel isolated, but they also feel insignificant, like useless specks in a vast cosmos. The universe itself appears to be absurd and pointless, and any human activities seem trivial. Such people may see humankind as being involved in a rat-race existence that has no useful purpose. From this vantage point, they cannot see any kind of cosmic order and have no contact with a spiritual force. They may become extremely depressed, despairing, and even suicidal. Frequently, they have the insight that even suicide is no solution; it seems there is no way out of their misery.”

For many of us, the splendor of spiritual awakening has been comparatively short-lived while the time spent suspended in pain seems interminable. Yet this is the nature of the shamanic path. Of the countless interviews and autobiographies I’ve read, the two most repeated words to issue from the mouths of shamans are “spirit” and “suffering.”

Shamanic Dismemberment

Give me everything mangled and bruised,
And I will make a light of it to make you weep.
And we will have rain,
And begin again.

– Deena Metzger, Leavings

A woman experiencing a lengthy Kundalini awakening told me of a period where she was having frequent nightmares from which she awoke screaming. All these terrible dreams had the same theme: “they” were hacking her to pieces. Eventually, these dreams began to change, and instead of being chopped up, dream figures were putting her back together in a way that made her — like the Bionic man — “better and stronger” than ever before.

This is a shamanic dismemberment experience, a symbolic transformational drama which has been recognized in the wisdom traditions from time immemorial. In Sumerian mythology, Inanna was a sky goddess who had to pass through seven gates of the underworld, each time being stripped of deeper parts of her being until she was naked and lifeless.

In the book, Shaman’s Path, Rowena Pattee describes the Egyptian enactment of this drama in the myth of Osiris, the pharaoh who was slain, dismembered and supernaturally resurrected to conceive his son Horus. In the Greek mystery religions, Pattee says that “Dionysus was torn to pieces by the Titans while his heart was rescued by Athena, goddess of wisdom, suggestive of the wisdom born of the dismemberment experience.”

In these ancient stories, something magnificent and creatively abundant occurs after the original being is broken apart. These myths infer that all creation is the result of a single divine Self which has been sacrificially fragmented. The Inuit Indians of the Arctic celebrate Takanakapsaluk, the dismembered goddess whose severed parts form all the creatures of the sea. And in pre-Aztec religion, the earth itself was created out of the dismembered parts of the goddess Tlalteuctli. As the myth goes, ever since she was torn apart and turned into the earth, Tlalteuctli she has wept and cannot be consoled accept through the “blood” of torn open (i.e., spiritually consecrated) human hearts.

“To sacrifice our hearts,” says Kate Duff, “is not to give ourselves away, but to keep ourselves true, by freeing our hearts from distraction and realigning ourselves with our appointed destinies. Ironically, we often find our true selves, and engage our souls, when our hearts are broken, bleeding or sacrificed.” (from The Alchemy of Illness)

Those of us who are being transformed may have graphic dreams or visions of being brutally cut up or torn apart. This phase may be preceded (or accompanied) by visions or dreams of catastrophic disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, nuclear holocaust, etc. Our primordial fears are triggered by these scenarios.

Unfortunately, some of us also have literal dismemberment experiences when the Kundalini is purifying our bodies and psyches. Our bones, joints, vertebrae, internal organs, eyes or other parts of the body may be gravely affected by the process. Serious injuries or diseases may occur which seem to be permanently destroying us.

Our very survival seems to hang by a thread. Kundalini researcher Tontyn Hopman reminds us that “awakening encompasses both the state of being in harmony with the Tao and the knife-edged path with its violent purifications and sudden, catastrophic perils.” The dangers of the path are not illusory, he tells us: “Everything may really be at stake… The Spirit knows no half measures or lukewarm adjustments. How else could a person be transformed except through the most intense experiences?”

Anyone who has suffered a serious illness knows what a nightmare long term disability and chronic pain can be. In some cases, other personal crises such as deaths of family members or friends — which sometimes occur in uncanny clusters around the individual with risen Kundalini — are the hardest part of the process. Sickness, injuries, and loss of loved ones are human ordeals that eventually confront us all, no matter what our Kundalini status may be. But it does seem that the risen Kundalini increases the likelihood of crisis in our lives. The Shakti Goddess will utilize everything possible to shake us up, break us open and pare us down, casting off everything we thought we had or knew or were.

Says Holger Kalweit:
“Many shamans were critically ill, socially unacceptable, and psychically confused over periods of several years; during their time of suffering their body and psyche adjusted themselves to an alternate mode of perception. This continuous biopsychic process of transformation often culminates in experiences of dismemberment, which represent the zenith and turning point of inner change toward a spiritual state of being.” (from Dreamtime & Inner Space)

At its deepest level, the dismemberment experience dismantles our old identity. It is a powerful death and rebirth process. The experience of being stripped to bone forces us to examine the bare essence of what we are. The divestment of everything superfluous is a fierce teaching. We learn what is truly important and what is nonessential to our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual survival. Loss impresses upon us the temporal nature of life. Especially if we are ill, we are forced to let go of things precious to us.

These sacrifices, says Kate Duff, may take the form of “our savings, marriage, mobility, or pride, even our own flesh and blood.” Through these losses, “we are reminded that nothing lasts forever or belongs to us; everything comes from and returns to an original source.”

In the most intense phases of transformation, we may be so disoriented or physically ill that we need to be helped with even our most personal needs. There have been periods in my process when simply crossing a room felt like scaling Mt. Olympias.

A psychic I consulted when I was having a hard time with Kundalini symptoms insisted that I “get a business card” and immediately set myself up as a healer. You’ve got to be kidding, I thought. In the shape I was in, I wouldn’t have been able to hold a job as a paperweight.

A more spiritual way of looking at the situation is expressed by the meditation teacher, Shinzen Young:
“If Nature (or ‘God’) has given you so much pain that you cannot do anything else other than be with it, then there is a message here: you are not expected to be doing anything else! In other words, spending time — even long periods of time — just feeling pain is a legitimate calling in the eyes of God and Nature. Assuming that you are making at least some effort to purify and evolve consciousness by being with pain in a skillful way, you are engaged in productive and meaningful work.” (from Break Through Pain)

Young goes on to say that not only is this inner work valuable for us as individuals; it is also a psychic contribution to the rest of the world:
“…whenever a person does something, it makes it easier for others to do that thing, even though the others may have no direct contact with or even knowledge of the original person’s work… According to this theory, a person isolated and cut off from contacts, who is working to purify through pain, is in some way making it easier to all other sufferers in the world to do the same; a worthwhile and meaningful job indeed!”

With this understanding, Young encourages us to “sacramentalize” our pain by regarding it “as a kind of imposed monastery or sacred ceremony.”

Anthropologist and mystic Felicitas D. Goodman notes that Siberian shamans regarded dismemberment as an essential phase of initiation for healers. To her surprise, Goodman discovered that this archetype seems universal. In her trance work with Westerners, those who had spontaneous dismemberment visions were invariably destined to become various kinds of healers.

The world around us falling apart in times of crisis parallels the psychological fragmentation which already exists within us. “One of the major themes in the literature on the transformation of consciousness is the notion that the disjointed, separated, fragmented parts of the psyche can be and need to be synthesized into a harmonious, integrated whole,” Ralph Metzner reminds us.

Often it isn’t until our life is in shambles that we become aware of the parts of ourselves which have become dispossessed. “In the core of our being we are singular and unified; at the surface of our interactions with the world, we are multiple and dispersed,” says Metzner. “In transformation we seek to recover that original unity.” (from The Unfolding Self)

This is precisely the task of shaman, as Joan Halifax explains:
“The shaman is a healed healer who has retrieved the broken pieces of his or her body and psyche and, through a personal rite of transformation, has integrated many planes of life experience: the body and the spirit, the ordinary and nonordinary, the individual and the community, nature and supernature, the mythic and the historical, the past, the present and the future.” (from Shamanic Voices)

Completing this restorative rite is serious business for the soul. Says Kalweit:
“The lonely struggle with the forces of nature, during which one is at their mercy for better or worse, is a requirement of shamanic training, because only when the apprentice becomes aware of his smallness and helplessness, when he becomes modest and humble, can his spirit blend with these tremendous forces. An awareness of the interwoven mystical unity of nature is an essential experience during initiation of of the shamanic view of the world in general.”

“The cure for dismemberment,” says Metzner, “is re-membering: remembering who we actually are.” As Halifax puts it: “To bring back to an original state that which was in primordial times whole and is now broken and dismembered is not only an act of unification but also a divine remembrance of a time when a complete reality existed.”

The positive side of the dismemberment experience is that it eventually leads to a “resurrection” — a higher state of spiritual development. The darkness which had seemed endless and impenetrable is at long last revealed to be simply a very hard passage — the proverbial tunnel, at the end of which is a beautiful, welcoming light.

The Long Haul

All of this wisdom evaporates pretty fast when one is suffering. Yet I’ve noticed that my darkest periods frequently precede a breakthrough of some sort. They seem to be a means of emptying me so something new can fill my cup. A longing for death can mean that we are approaching a turning point. We have reached a place of nothingness which seems barren but is in actuality a realm of dormancy, a wintering of the soul without which there can be no spring. “Right before a change, we encounter all our obstacles to that change,” counsels Caroline Casey. “This is known as a `sunset effect’: as the pattern goes down, it glows most vividly.” (from Making the Gods Work for You)

Everything that lives follows its own internal rhythms of growth and decline. The Kundalini process also develops in cycles of expansion and contraction. The state of expansion may give us a taste of the eternal, but we’re not home free.

As Roberto Assagioli says:
“Such an exalted state lasts for varying periods, but it is bound to cease… The inflow of light and love is rhythmical as is everything in the universe. After a while it diminishes or ceases and the flood is followed by the ebb.” (from Psychosynthesis)

It can help to understand that the first stage of any transformational process is chaos. Things blow up, fall apart, go berserk. In alchemy, this chaotic phase is referred to as the prima materia which forms the basis of the work which will eventually produce the “gold” — the desired outcome (or spiritual treasure). “The prima materia is in a state of conflict all the time,” astrologer Liz Greene explains, “blind, potent, undirected, but full of raw power and constantly embattled.” (from Dynamics of the Unconscious)

When we find ourselves in this initial phase of transformation, everything is precarious. The old anchors and safety nets no longer hold. We feel confused, miserable, hopeless. Cultures more attuned to the cycles of nature regarded adversity as a possibility for growth. The Chinese word for crisis is wei-chi, meaning a perilous opportunity.

Often, the more radical the transformation, the more severe the crisis which precedes it. Shamans and spiritual teachers have long understood this principle: the greater the initiation crisis, the greater the potential for beneficial growth. As Z. Budapest puts it: “Turmoil is fertile soil necessary for the soul to find eternal wisdom, insights, and eventual peace of mind.” Of course, there are no guarantees. Initiation is never totally predictable or safe.

The glamorous idea that Kundalini initiation is an internal refuge of bliss is quite misleading. More often, as Alice Bailey warned, our initiations are expensive rites of passage, bringing upon us “increasing work and increasing responsibility.”

“Lest we have considered difficulties and darknesses for too long and become a little dismayed,” advises Michal Eastcott, “let us remind our selves that the truth of this promise is always before us every night — it is then, in the darkness, that we see the stars.” (from I : The Story of the Self)

In Fire in the Soul, Joan Borysenko says that “crisis resolves in one of three ways.” The ordeal may end when “we slowly put ourselves back together again and life goes on in the same overtly or vaguely unsatisfactory way that it did before,” or “we become so terrified, agitated or depressed that we commit suicide or stay in the desert of mental illness; or we come out transformed, emerging with a new strength, wisdom and vision.”

This third and most healing possibility is the great alchemical “secret.” On the heels of chaos comes a developmental restructuring. This is paralleled in Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine’s discovery that large perturbations of energy cause living systems to fall apart, then re-coalesce in a more elegant order. “First destruction, then creation — this is the way of the Goddess, the Shakti,” says Vicki Noble. “The fire burns through the old structures, eradicating them, transmuting their energies to a higher vibrational level.” (from Shakti Woman).

Or, as Deepak Chopra expresses it, “…life shows itself as a miracle of renewal. All the order that dissolves into chaos comes back as another kind of order.” But this new pattern is rarely apparent immediately; more often, it comes into being in fits and starts. We begin to notice something shifting in our perception and response to life. Some of these changes are dramatic and extraordinary; some are more subtle and vaguely familiar, as though lost or atrophied parts of ourselves are reemerging.

Sometimes our initiation is one of joyful expansion, heralded by a sense of soul-elating freedom. Feelings are intense and we are hyper-energized, immersed in sublime experiences and soul-nurishing realizations. Although we may be soaring out of control, we have no doubt that we’re in flight. There is a breathtaking sense of being swept into the numinous, carried aloft by fantastic forces. In the expansion stage, particularly in an intense Kundalini awakening, the manifestations are so powerful that we are ripped away from our ordinary concerns.

In the contraction stage, we may feel more grounded, but so also may our usual fears and troubles come flooding back, often amplified because we may be in a worse predicament than before the process began. It may seem like we’ve made no progress at all. We may feel ourselves physically or mentally deteriorating in a terrifying way, and fear that we’ve fallen from grace as well.

Whether it comes on like a sudden crash or takes hold more gradually, contraction has an anticlimactic tone. Things seem to fall into a state of decline. If the expansion state seemed fraught with significance, the contraction phase may be characterized by oppressive meaninglessness. We may still feel the spiritual process at work within us, but now the dazzling perks are gone. No more epiphanies, no more beautiful visitations, no amazing signs of divine intervention.

Depression deepens into despair as we watch the magic of our recent transcendent experiences slipping into a self-doubting fog. Like a little child checking the mirror every day to see if he has grown, we keep taking inventory of our condition, searching for any positive changes. The whole thing may seem like some kind of cosmic joke on us. We may begin to seriously question if we are truly in a transformational process at all. Are we hopeless cases, beyond redemption? Has something gone sour with the process itself?

The expansion stages are generally shorter than the contracted states which may seem to drag on forever. But this is also the natural rhythm. As the contraction stage continues to pull us lower and lower, we can easily feel as if we are “losing it.” Our past conditioning and the opinions of those around us may work very much against us in this phase. Such painful experiences are roundly condemned, as Marc Ian Barasch observes, “in a culture that celebrates surfaces, speed, and success… We try at all costs to resist our descent, because we believe that once we hit bottom, there will be no return.” (from The Healing Path) But if we allow ourselves to be drawn into this dark chasm, at the very nadir of futility and anguish, the process shifts once more.

After wrestling through a personal health ordeal that included two bouts with cancer, Paul Pearsall concluded: “Having gone through my own best and worst times, I am convinced that there is an order in our living, and like the matter and antimatter or the quantum world, for every magic moment of insight and celebration, there are ‘antimoments’ of pain and fear.” (from Making Miracles) “The law of chaotic order” says Pearsall, “suggests that chaos — the actual process of disorder — is healthy in and of itself. The universe is not a beautiful balance; it is a chaotic miracle.” With this in mind, he remarks that “We can live our life in dread of future problems, or we can accept the fact that we could not exist if we were not, like all of the cosmos, in the process of constant change and remember that the definition of the word dread is not only “fear and apprehension” but also “deep awe and reverence.”

External crises and their emotional counterparts often serve to release us from everything which prevents us from living authentically. Remember Pavlov and the dogs he trained to salivate at the sound of a bell? When his laboratory was destroyed in a flood, none of the surviving dogs retained their conditioning!

“When our souls are on fire,” says Joan Borysenko, “old beliefs and opinions can be consumed, bringing us closer to our essential nature and to the heart of healing.” At last, new ways of thinking, perceiving, relating, responding and being take shape from our very core. As Elizabeth Kubler-Ross puts it, we emerge “polished” from the “tumbler” of our ordeals. And as long as we are incarnate on this planet, we will continue this process of spiritual refinement. At intervals, the entire cycle begins again, dissolving and re-crystallizing, waxing and waning. We are being inwardly tempered. It can help to remember this when we find ourselves in the more difficult parts of the process. It’s all necessary, it’s all purposeful.

Transformation isn’t an easy, lightning flash switch. That’s why awakening is called a journey — it takes time to reach the destination. There will be many challenging times ahead of us. Our souls and our faith will be tested. The resultant suffering is part of the universal curriculum. “Adversity marks the history of all the saints and world-servers, and the story of Job is proverbial, wrote Michal Eastcott. “Yet still, when we come under the shadow of these periods, we are apt to forget they are part of the communion of saints, and are a necessary time of preparation and building of fortitude…”

“The active germination of a growth process often takes place at the low, seemingly negative, phases of a psychological cycle,” says psychologist Ira Progoff. “Thus, at the very time when the most constructive developments are taking place within a person, his outer appearance may be depressed, confused, and even disturbed.”

Our understanding of this process can help us better cope with our experiences. “The birth and characteristics of the new self are determined in large part by the stories we tell ourselves about why the time of darkness has come,” says Joan Borysenko. “If we have a strong belief that our suffering is in the service of growth, dark night experiences can lead us to depths of psychological and spiritual healing and revelation that we literally could not have dreamed of and that are difficult to describe in words without sounding trite.”

The Buddhists have long understood the art of embracing the vicissitudes of life as just part of the ongoing parade. Says Tarthang Tulka:
“Learning to ‘flow’ with our experience gives us true stability and freedom. When we discover change as the real nature of existence, our old conception of the world seems dwarfed and limited. Our world comes alive; we are whole again. A new reality emerges from the old, like a phoenix out of fire.” (from Openness Mind)

Rachel Naomi Remen comments upon the paradoxical truth that “The less we are attached to life, the more alive we can become.” In letting go of what we thought we couldn’t live without, we become more deeply able to participate in life. This is not to say that we will all live happily ever after. “Waking up entails remembering your whole self in the midst of trance states and problems and making sense out of them,” Arnold Mindell reminds us. “It does not mean being without problems.”

In his book Imagick, Ted Andrews correlates the Kundalini process with what he calls the “13th Path” of the Qabalistic tradition. In the Tarot, he relates it to the archetype of the High Priestess. “It is a bittersweet path,” he warns, and one that presents us with “a tremendous test of faith.”

On this path (which is also called “Gateway to Knowledge”), after being divested of all nonessentials and overcoming our karmic obstacles, we are able to discover our deepest truths. “This is the path of the final dark night of the soul journey,” says Andrews. “It is here that we have the opportunity to awaken our strongest intuition and … to impregnate ourselves with the light and love of the divine!”

Brothers and Sisters,

With the final act, on its final day, a loosely organized yet joyful first annual Monterey Music Festival realized its intended purpose.

frani_2651.jpg

Truth warrior Michael Franti and his group of musicians known as Spearhead came out to a half frozen and wiery crowd and served up a slamming, jamming, dose of love and knowledge.

Spearheads music is joyfully injected into the open mind /body of the waiting crowd through Michael Frantis charismatic, enigmatic, tireless voice and spirit. Through Michaels bright spirit Spearhead offered their righteous message of love , tolerance, social awareness and fun out into the night air.

The small (and who isn’t next to Franti’s towering 6′ 8″ frame) yet tight and talented group of supporting musicians were dialed in like a finally honed killing machine. Which of course, is the furthest thing from their minds, from the first words out Franti’s mouth…

“Those who start wars never fight them and those who fight wars never like them”, Franti and crew drove home a message built on awareness, love, compassion and tireless reggae rooted grooves.

Regardless of the freezing outdoor venue and sparsely populated crowd Franti served up the same committed and joyful dose of his artistry as if it were a warm summer night in front of his usual crowd of tens of thousands. This speaks volumes about the man and his mission.

It is safe to say that Truth Souljah Michael Franti will only continue to nurture, grow and build awareness through his gift of love and musical artistry. A great man once said ” The True Revolutionary is Guided by Great Feelings of Love”, if that’s the case then Franti truly deserves the title of revolutionary. The world is a much better place for his efforts and contributions.

Blessings and Namaste Michael.

Now, the only question left unanswered is….

“What are you willing to do to raise awareness and contribute to the Movement ?” Huh ! What?

Citizen Soul Power and Spearhead leave you with this…

Blessings and Love to All

“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military/industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. “

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Millions of people across this country and the globe are being targeted for harassment in various forms by a growing number of harassment groups. Citizens are being watched, followed, monitored and tortured; their private lives invaded, ruined, and many kept in virtual isolation from friends and family.

FREEDOM FROM COVERT HARASSMENT AND SURVEILLANCE (FFCHS) was formed to address these atrocities and seek justice for those who are victims of harassment group activities which stem from corrupt government elements at all levels, certain defense contractors, corporations, as well as individuals and teams of private citizens.

FFCHS is a conference call group that began February 26, 2005. We presently have members in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, South America, India, and Australia. We meet at conference calls throughout the week for purposes of support, networking, and advocacy. Times and call-in information are listed on the “Contact Info” page at this site.
It is our goal to bring awareness to local and state officials, Congress, the media, and the general public of harassment group activities, mostly consisting of organized stalking and electromagnetic torture, so that laws will be passed and other measures taken to free those entrapped in what is known to us as “the silent holocaust.”

A Few words about Michael Franti / Spearhead

michaelfra-headshot.jpg

“The bass, the treble, don’t make a rebel/Having your life together does.” Those words, rapped by Michael Franti back in 1992, seem eerily prophetic today. In an industry notorious for perpetrating fantasy and the philosophy of “getting mine,” the Bay Area-based musician is a thinking, feeling person joyously out of step with his contemporaries in the music industry. Spark talks politics with Franti, from the set of his latest music video to backstage of a free performance at Amoeba Music.

Franti’s dedication to making politics personal began in the late ’80swith the agitprop punk band The Beatnigs, continued in the early ’90s with the industrial hip-hop forum Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, to arrive at what he is today: a mesmerizing spoken word artist and leader of the politically astute San Francisco band Spearhead.

He makes conscious music that engages brain, booty and soul in a funky soundtrack of hip-hop, reggae, Latin, blues, spoken word and R&B. He’s stepping in the oversized footprints of Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Gil Scott-Heron, Sly Stone, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Chuck D yet creating his own path — embracing new music and communities as he goes along. Live shows have included drum circles, alternative energy generators, DJs, potlucks, massage therapy and information tables.

He’s rapped about AIDS awareness (“Positive”) and homelessness (“Hole in the Bucket”). After the band’s second major-label album, “Chocolate Supa Highway,” Spearhead put attracting mainstream attention on the back burner to remain true to its consciousness-raising mission. Its 2001 album “Stay Human” centered on the death penalty. In July 2003, the band released “Everyone Deserves Music,” a conscious party that drags speakers onto the White House lawn until the break of dawn.

Franti documents injustice, but more important, he does something about it. He’s inhaled tear gas on the front lines of anti-WTO rallies and lent his time and talent to support Mumia Abu-Jamal, anti-death penalty legislation, marijuana decriminalization, conscientious objector groups and the anti-war organization Not in Our Name.

For artists struggling to make it in the rap game, songs with politically progressive messages practically beg for radio banishment and audience alienation. Michael Franti has put his mind on record for more than 15 years and enjoys a supportive and loyal worldwide fan base. And he doesn’t wait for an election year to get political. The heart that beats inside his chest — booming louder than any passing car stereo system — simply won’t let him.
